Island Children's Montessori School (3 to 6 Years) About the School: Twenty-two years ago Director Susan Thomas and her staff opened the doors at Port Madison Lutheran Church and welcomed their first class of preschoolers. Since then, leadership has passed to Elizabeth Orr and to current director Joan Gillanders, and hundreds of children have begun their educations at the not-for-profit Island Children's Montessori School (ICMS). The Montessori program is based on Dr. Maria Montessori's belief that children learn best through direct, hands-on experience with the world around them, in their natural pursuit of knowledge.
