Parks & Recreation
Gazzam Lake Gazzam Lake Park and Wildlife Preserve includes 318 acres of highly valued upland forests and wetlands in the southwest quadrant of Bainbridge Island, between Baker Hill Road and Marshall Road, a quarter mile west of Crystal Spring Drive. Current access to the property is from Marshall Road, with very limited parking. The citizens of Bainbridge Island purchased this exceptional park after a special bond election in February 1995 plus the addition of various state grants. The land contains forests dominated by Douglas fir, western red cedar, western hemlock, red alder and big-leaf maple. Plus, the land protects priority species such as purple martin, bald eagle, pileated woodpecker and numerous songbirds and migrant birds. The area is home to Chinook, chum and pink salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout, and surf smelt. In the northwest part of the park is a 13-acre freshwater wetland area that has remained substantially untouched by human development, thus providing scenic beauty and wildlife habitat for a variety of species. |
